The Painted Portrait
Taught By Lon Brauer
Many artists aspire to create portraits, driven by a desire to capture the human condition. In this two-day workshop, you’ll focus on understanding the structure of the human head, providing a foundation for achieving likeness by identifying shapes and assembling the parts to build a cohesive portrait.
Day 1: You’ll start by exploring the skull, the fundamental structure for capturing a portrait. Understanding and rendering the skull gives you insight into the form beneath the surface. Lon will demonstrate in oil paint and pastel, showcasing the simple yet essential bone structure we all share.
Day 2: Live model. Building on the previous day, you’ll learn how to incorporate the skull as a foundation in rendering a likeness. Lon will provide several quick demos to explain his approach to portraiture. You’ll be introduced to a unique way of seeing the portrait and to painting in general for lively and adventurous compositions.
This workshop is best suited for students with a basic understanding of drawing and painting concepts. While some anatomy will be covered, the primary focus will be on form, line, shape, and brushwork.
This class only has 8 spots available (so a lot of individual instruction will be given).

Lon Brauer
Lon Brauer is an American artist known for his work in figure and plein air landscape. Born in 1955 and coming of age in the seventies, he has roots in the abstract expressionist movement. Although a representational artist he steers clear of the overtly literal. His work is a mix of the abstract and representational bringing an expressionistic use of paint and materials to create images that challenge the viewer with new perspectives.
Lon shows his work nationally. He presents numerous workshops on painting techniques and alternative methods. He lives and works with his partner, quillwork artist Djuana Tucker, and owns Lon Brauer Studios in Granite City, Illinois.
